Hot versus Cold

What you should know about hot water:
We all love those hot steamy showers, sure, but you may be killing your hair in the process.
  • It damages the hair shaft
  • It dehydrates the hair strand
  • It rids your scalp of precious oils
  • It can cause a break between the collagen and protein material that makes up the hair shaft
  • It creates white specks that result when the cuticle has erupted and the cortex is now exposed
  • It creates dry hair from resulting lack of lubrication
  • It weakens the hair, leads to breakage, and stunted growth
  • It creates an even oilier scalp (now that the scalp's natural oil is sucked out of it)
  • It causes frizz
What you should know about cold water:
  • It closes the cuticle and promotes shine
  • It seals in moisture
  • It promotes less tangles
  • It can reduce volume
The end conclusion?
For me I've learned that the best thing to do is during the week just rinse my hair with cold distilled water (don't let warm shower water touch my hair during the week Monday-Thursday), and then on the weekend (Friday-Sunday) I rinse my hair concoctions out of my hair with warm shower/bath water and then have a final rinse of only cold distilled water.

For those of you that still can't make up their minds on which rinse is right for you here is a primary example of the staggering difference between the two options. This woman tried both and picture documented the results afterwards.

  1. I believe the picture on the bottom is actually spidermom's hair, no? Please don't just take pics from people on LHC without at least giving credit or something.
